11 Best SEO Tips for a Website Designer

  • Just some friendly reminders to ensure your excellent web designs get the most exposure from search engine optimization on the web. The importance of this aspect of websites is most often overlooked with the purpose of websites being for businesses or companies.

To start with design and develop with CSS and use an external style sheet for all page styling as this gives you great code to text ratios.

    1. URL

It all starts from the domain name choice can have a impact form the start to its success with SEO.  Choosing a domain name with keywords will ultimately have a major positive effect with search engines, also your linking in directories will only allow website address too. The other tip is to use one of the domain address  www. or just the domain name this stops duplicate content which you will be penalised for and also combines your PR on one domain. To achieve this search for remove duplicate content in google or htaccess modification.

    2. Neighbors

Be very wary of any content that can be added to your site by others. I left comments published automatically on my blog which had a couple of pages allow spammers to rip it up and add shammy words to the page and link out with hyperlink in the email in turn Google penalized my site sub 100.
Also be wary of sites that you link to that have no PR I always think they are suspect.

    3. Titles and Meta Tags

All indexers use the title tag to varying degrees and keeping the core keywords are imperative to good rankings also the description have to keep it humanly readable. Other Meta Tags are still used by some indexers but most will use page word relevance (below).

    4. Keyword Relevance

Refine the relevance percentage it will go a long way but still depends on the terms you want to rank for and constantly changing. If you use Fire fox it has a host of SEO tools to use for your website to measure your word relevance SEO Quake is one I use frequently.

    5. Deep Linking

Deep linking pages will give you a lot more sway with the search engines as they have a tendency to look to the sites roots to find the diamonds.

Also you pick up phrase strings that can be sculpted into gaining more relevant and sale / goal oriented browsers.

Submitting to article directories, Press release sites and directories that allow deep links are an easy way too achieve this.

    6. Sitemap

Create a sitemap if you don’t have a dynamic site this site can index your site for you xml-sitemaps.com other wise find a plugin for sitemap. Update the sitemap regularly, once a week as Google gives pages a personal recognition if they have been around for a while I have notices also don’t delete pages without a redirect otherwise you will get the penalty slap. I unpublished about 25% of pages on my site and got a slap down from the main search engine.

    7. No tables

Upgrade search engines do put weight on websites that have table less design as there is less of the code taken up by irrelevant subject matter on the page and the code to text ratio is a lot better. In turn creating a content heavy website that has much more content and not cluttered by code.

    8. RSS

Give a little it may go a long way and even further. Create the nest that will keep em coming back. Content is king and lets not forget that either but have a RSS feed at least otherwise people wont see your latest and greatest posts and come back to your site. If you have a pinging service for your CMS or Website add it and set it up otherwise a really good one that gets the main ping websites is http://pingomatic.com/

    9. Blogg it

It goes without saying these days if you can blog it the do it advantages are huge and SEO possibilities massive, one or two posts a week isn’t too hard =). Keep the content on a niche or particular topic and build off that.

    10. Refresh Content

Change the wording in the page every month and update your xml sitemap is dynamic this will keep the pages full of fresh content.

    11. Linking

Reciprocal linking is no good. Have every page in the site have a page linking to it off every page through either top level site bars navigation. Internal linking has to be present and will also get you some great titles in your content links. Also utilise your websites that you create giving a link back with web design or website design never hurts.

Nice article, some additions for you…

#1 Don’t forget to employ geographic parameters in all your meta data and keyword, titles, descriptions and maybe even URL if possible. Stating where you are is more likely to gain you visitors that will convert customers and should increase your share of specific geographic searches rather than just generic searches for your keywords or phrases.

#2 Contact details in the description meta tag, can produce a call to action from the results pages without someone even visiting your website!

#3 Adding your site to google business directory and/or googlemaps can get you at very top of first page when using a geographic search. My own site for example gets me on page one using “web developer northern ireland” I think I am only just in the top 100 otherwise! (not taking into account google local business results.
